In what many deem a premature move, Michael Jordan sold the Hornets to his buddy, Melvin Capital founder & Hornets minority owner, Gabe Plotkin. Amid the WallStreetBets frenzy and historic short squeeze of GameStop stock, Plotkin blew up Melvin Capital. Let's say Jordan had some money in the fund on a handshake with Plotkin and suddenly was on the hook for possibly one of the 7 billion dollars lost on Gamestop, having a shiny NBA franchise that he turned a $300M investment into $3B would be a good way to get liquid enough to cover his losses.
What happens in Vegas...
For many years, pro sports teams avoided Las Vegas for fear of the optics surrounding sports betting. Now, with it legal in over half the states in America the floodgates have opened. First in the NFL, Oakland moved their historic Raiders out of town. Next, the Vegas Golden Knights were born into the NHL as an expansion team in 2017 (they already won their first Stanley Cup this year,) and now the Oakland Athletics are making the move to bring an MLB team to the desert. $380 million in taxpayer money is clearing the way for a $1.5B stadium with a plan to open in 2027. Bullish all things Las Vegas.
Podcast Bubble Popping
After taking $20 million from Spotify, Meghan Markle has allegedly been faking her podcasts by staging the questions through an agent and adding in the audio of her asking the questions in post production. The podcast niche is still young and companies are slowly realizing not every personality can podcast and not all podcasts must revolve around interviews and guests. Let's see how these contracts begin to look moving forward.
Food for Thought
The Michelin Guide announced that it is expanding to Colorado and that reviewers have been visiting restaurants in Denver, Boulder, Aspen, Snowmass Village, Vail and Beaver Creek Resort for the past few months. Great news for foodies and the state economy.
